2016, the year of VR, Rio Olympic is immersive

NBC confirmed that it will stream 85 hours Rio de Janeiro Olympics in virtual reality, exclusively to Samsung Gear VR owners. It is the first time Olympics programming will be available in VR. The Olympics will take place from August 5 to August 21 this year, but VR content will air “on delay”, one day behind the schedule. Yet you will be able to watch the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field, gymnastics, men’s basketball, boxing, beach volleyball, and a many other sports in full goggled-up VR. Other virtualized sports will include diving, boxing, and fencing. NBC will also release VR highlight packages of those sports.

Back in March, Olympic Broadcasting Services announced that it would broadcast one “key” event per day in VR, but NBC may have just upped the ante. If you don’t have a Gear headset, “VR” in this case is mostly just 360-video. Virtual reality coverage of sports, essentially 360 videos, has been growing since VR headsets such as the Samsung Gear and Oculus Rift became widely available this year. Sports broadcasters are betting that virtual reality will be the next big game-changing way to watch sports. But, at the moment, the audience is limited to those that have smartphones and VR headsets as they are costly.
