How to choose right 360 camera and vr camera?

First, when planning to make a piece of VR film content, it’s important to ask yourself: does this experience really need to be immersive? How will the content be delivered and experienced? What are my budgetary and production constraints? All of these factors can help narrow down your camera choices from the get go. Integrated, off-the-shelf VR cameras make the post-production process much simpler, but custom camera rigs can also have some advantages for more discerning filmmakers. I’ll cover a variety of options here.

Entry Level

For entry-level choices, I like the Samsung Gear 360 or Ricoh Theta S, both of which let users easily experiment with VR for under $400. These dual lens 360 cameras are consumer-friendly, with small, portable form factors and accompanying smartphone apps to quickly review footage. The Ricoh Theta S can also livestream which is a nice perk.

Ricoh Announces Theta SC, a Colorful Mid-Range Addition to 360 Camera Lineup
These cameras offer lower resolution than the more high-end options, but if you’re a consumer or even a professional just dabbling in VR for the first time, these are solid yet affordable options to help give you the lay of the land before making a larger investment. Even more experienced professionals shouldn’t overlook these cameras, they’re great to have on hand for proof of concept, scouting, and pre-visualization.

Mid Range

Moving up to the mid-range, the GoPro Omni ($5,000) is a strong off-the-shelf option, offering six synchronized HERO4 Black cameras in a portable spherical rig, all capturing content at 8K resolution. In addition to the hardware, GoPro’s Kolor software suite gives users a straightforward way to import, stitch, view, and publish content.

gopro-omni-kitThe Omni has some drawbacks, notably, no live preview or real time stitching. But combined with a Ricoh Theta S or Samsung Gear 360 you can still get quick on-set previews. The Omni remains my first choice in this price range because it provides a one stop-shop for VR at high resolution. And at the size of a grapefruit, it gives filmmakers a lot more freedom and flexibility on set than they might have with a larger custom rig. If you need something that won’t break the bank but will still produce high-res content, to me this is the most straightforward option on the market.

High End

If you’re looking for a professional camera, the Nokia OZO is a great option. Specifically designed for professional VR production, the Ozo is one spherical camera with eight synchronized sensors, and it comes with a standalone computer with Ozo software for live stitching and preview. It also offers ambisonic sound recording, partial stereo, and can live stream in HD resolution (and can capture footage up to 6K resolution).

VR vs AR

What is VR?

VR stands for virtual reality is the simulation of a 3D image of any environment that allows interaction in a physical way. VR has been created to allow people to escape reality and make it feel like you are in the game.

What is AR?

AR stands for Augmented reality is a combination of real life and virtual reality. Devices using augmented reality allow you to interact with other people whilst using a device to browse the internet, use maps and control your music.

Examples of VR & AR

One of the most commonly talked about AR devices is Google Glass. Google Glass was created as an experiment by Google to see how well AR can be integrated with people’s ordinary lives. This allows customers to use features such as maps, messages and music with touch gestures and voice commands.

Virtual reality devices have increased in popularity with projected sales expected to reach over 2 billion pounds in 2016! Oculus Rift being one of the standout devices, They allow gamers to feel fully immersed in their favourite virtual worlds and make you feel apart of the game. Samsung and HTC have also released their own virtual reality headsets with a number of other companies set to follow suit.

Game Examples – Most Popular

There are a wide variety of games that are available using both AR and VR, most notably AR game Pokemon Go, which has been downloaded by millions of people worldwide and can be found on a large number of iOS and Android devices.
There will be a wide variety of game releases this year for virtual reality consoles with Minecraft coming to XBOX and Gran Turismo Sport and Final Fantasy XIV coming to Playstation. This will give AR a run for its money.

Which companies are backing VR or AR?

So what companies are backing VR and AR I hear you ask? Tim Cook, Apple CEO has stated that he thinks AR has a big future and will overtake the use of VR. Although, with no known plan of Apple using VR or AR this may just be their way of putting a damper on their big competitors virtual reality systems.
Snapchat is also a large backer of augmented reality with their popular filters that allow you to change your selfie. They provide different filters everyday for users to keep their selfies unique and even allows you to get your mates involved. This is one of the best uses of AR to date and has given Snapchat a new lease of life and helped it to continue growing its user base.
Microsoft Hololens augmented reality headset is being used in the NASA Kennedy Space Centre to simulate what it feels like to be on Mars. This augmented reality experience is one of many that are likely to be introduced at attractions over the next few years.
Alton Towers are going to take virtual reality to a new level by introducing VR into their new ride Galactica opening later this year. This will be an interesting development and could change the way theme park rides are made!
Over the past year both Samsung and HTC have released their own virtual reality headsets that can be used with apps on their devices. The Samsung Gear costing around £68. The device has been created by Oculus and works alongside phone apps, films and videos and adds a new dimension to your phone.
The HTC Vive costs from £759 and allows you to play games from the Steam collection and works alongside Valve providing users a wide range of games that fully immerse you into the gameplay. HTC Vive has currently been penned as one of the best virtual reality headsets on the market alongside the Oculus Rift range.

How to setup Playstation VR with videos?

For the most part, PlayStation VR is pretty easy to set up. There are some tricky wires to handle and space requirements to clear, though, which Sony detailed in a new video series below.

The company released this quick and easy three part series today so that players can get up and running ASAP when the kit launches on Thursday. Part one gives you a virtual unboxing (if you hadn’t already watched enough real ones,) part two shows you what to actually do with the things you’ll find inside, while the third and final part tells you how to setup your play area so that it’s both safe and suitable. We really think this all could have been one combined video, but then again our attention spans are very…

Uh, where were we? Anyway, once you’ve completed these steps you’ll be good to finally dive into VR. It’s the end of a long chapter in the headset’s history, having originally been revealed all the way back in March 2014 under the code name of Project Morpheus. It arrives on October 13th with an impressive launch line-up including the likes of Battlezone, Here They Lie, and Job Simulator. If you’re having trouble choosing what to get, check out our 50 Days Of PlayStation VR countdown where we’ve highlighted one game a day. Just three days left to go!

You should also be sure to check out our full review of the headset, complete with our assessment of the hardware, design, and tracking. We’ll have plenty more PS VR coverage going forward, so stay tuned. There are also plenty of PS VR games we’ve already reviewed here with even more coming soon.

Reveals Nepal’s Untold Water Story Using Virtual Reality

International development charity WaterAid has launched its first virtual reality documentary, Aftershock. The film immerses viewers in the unique challenges faced by hill-top communities in Nepal to restore access to water in the aftermath of last year’s devastating earthquakes.

Shot in the village of Kharelthok, Aftershock uses the power of virtual reality to engage viewers as they follow plumber Krishna Sunuwar, 58, taking on the challenge of repairing the community’s damaged water system. Across earthquake-affected areas in the region, nearly half of all water supplies were destroyed leaving thousands of people without enough clean water and vulnerable to disease.

Produced and directed in-house by the WaterAid film team, Aftershock is set against the breathtaking backdrop of Nepal’s mountain communities. Aftershock can be viewed on a laptop, but for the most immersive virtual reality experience viewers are encouraged to use a 3d VR headset or cardboard viewer.

The United Nations Foundation Is Using VR To Show Malaria’s Impact

The United Nation Foundation has worked on many worthwhile products, but one of their newest is a virtual reality initiative that it is undertaking as part of its ongoing efforts to eradicate malaria.
The UN Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is tasked with multiplying the efficacy of the work of the United Nations by “mobilizing the energy and expertise of business and non-governmental organizations to help the UN tackle issues including climate change, global health, peace and security, women’s empowerment, poverty eradication, energy access, and U.S.-UN relations.”
Through the “Nothing But Nets” program, the UN Foundation is partnering with the likes of Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry in order to distribute thousands of mosquito nets to the world’s most at-risk areas.
As part of “Nothing but Nets,” the UN foundation is producing a virtual reality experience aimed at raising awareness and compassion for this incredibly important global-health concern. The experience will take viewers inside a Tanzanian refugee camp, and is being designed to be an unflinching look at the harsh conditions within.

Upload:Why use VR to tell this story?
Henderson: It’s incredibly powerful. VR has an ability to instantly transport you into any location and experience. If done well, it has the ability to make you feel connected to the story. If you feel like you’re there, it is much more powerful than regular films. And in this particular case, we want people to see and feel what it’s like to be a refugee – but through her eyes and her experience.

Google Brings Cardboard Camera to iOS

Google’s Cardboard Camera lets you capture immersive photos from smartphone hardware you already own. The app has now launched on iOS, letting you snap 360 degree 3D photos from your iPhone.

Cardboard Camera launched on Android late last year. The ingenious app uses the parallax created by the rotation of your phone, along with some computer vision processing, to capture a 360 degree panorama in 3D—all with the camera that’s already on your smartphone. That’s particularly cool, because even dedicated consumer 360 degree cameras like the Samsung Gear 360 and Ricoh Theta can’t shoot in 3D.

Today, Google launched Cardboard Camera on iOS, bringing the magical 3D capability to the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

google cardboard camera

The app captures what Google calls ‘VR Photos’, panoramic views up to 360 degrees along the horizon (sadly, not fully spherical) that also have 3D depth. To use it you just hit the capture button then slowly rotate in a complete circle. Google then assembles and renders the photo, which you can share easily across the web with a link. You can also opt to record the sound of the scene to be played back during viewing for added immersion.

google cardboard camera app (4)
A panorama captured and viewed with Cardboard Camera’s VR mode
Of course you won’t be able to see the 3D effect without a Cardboard headset, but even if you don’t have one yet, you can still snap and share panoramas easily with the app (even to friends who don’t have a headset themselves), and you’ll get the added immersive benefit of 3D later when you decide to pick up a headset.

Viewing the photos through an iPhone reveals the same impressive depth capture we saw in the Android version. With the iPhone’s display lacking in pixel density compared to flagship Android phones, the Cardboard Camera photos don’t look as sharp, but this is balanced out by the quality of the iPhone’s camera compared to phones in the same class.

Cardboard Camera is free on both Android and iOS. On Android, the app is rated 4.3 out of 5 across 11,000 reviews, and has been installed more than 1 million times.

Why is WebVR such a big deal for the future of VR?

Why is WebVR such a big deal for the future of VR? There are several key reasons.

DISTRIBUTION

One of the questions that keep coming back in the VR world is: how do we get people to come back to their headsets.  The industry answer so far has been to bring content to the headsets through the app stores. WebVR opens the door to a much more scalable approach: bringing headsets to the content. We should focus on bringing the content where the audience is, which is Facebook, LinkedIn, WordPress, Reddit, Twitter, Google search results… all those online publishing platforms who have a much wider and pre-existing reach compared to the brand new VR app stores. The web has already disrupted the distribution of music, images and videos, VR content is next.

CROSS-PLATFORM

VR is very fragmented right now. There is a new VR headset hitting the market pretty much every week, with its own ecosystem (app store, controllers etc…). WebVR does a lot of the hard work to enable cross platform compatibility. In other words, it’s rather straightforward to make a WebVR experience compatible with all headsets, whereas for native builds you have to build for each headset.

IMMEDIACY

It’s 2016, people don’t want to download things. They want content that is one click away. WebVR is the only way I know to allow VR to be one click away.
WebVR doesn’t mean we don’t need app stores, of course. Advanced games and long-form movies will offer a better experience if downloaded, and many people looking for content will head to the app stores to find it. The great thing is that WebVR is totally compatible with native apps and app store distribution. I expect to see more and more native apps embedding WebVR content, so they can benefit from the store distribution too, while leveraging the web as a scalable infrastructure.
