News about Google I/O - VR Headset

Google's I/O event starts tomorrow, Wednesday @ 10 am PST. Google's I/O event is similar to Apple's WWDC and Facebook's F8 conferences, except perhaps bigger!

Google has been gradually adding VR content via YouTube 360 videos paired with their Google cardboard devices and clones for a while now. The Google I/O event has dedicated sessions to creating VR experiences, and the company is widely rumored to launch its first dedicated VR headset that will take on Samsung’s Gear VR, Facebook’s Oculus Rift, and HTC’s Vive.

Google's new headset is rumored to be less powerful than the Vive and Rift, although both of these devices need powerful PCs to run. The Google VR headset won’t be tethered to a PC or smartphone and instead be a standalone VR headset, which wouldn’t require users to use their smartphones.

Google is making no secret of the fact that it is pushing Virtual Reality. Their conference schedule includes an entire content track at the conference dedicated to VR, with seven sessions dedicated to Virtual or Augmented Reality, including one called “VR at Google,” which promises to discuss “what we have built, what we have learned, and where we are headed.”
